1. Simple knot
Let's start with the simple knot. It's the easiest type of knot to learn, serving as the basis for tying other knots.
Even if you don't always use ropes, you tie a simple knot in everyday situations, such as tying your shoelaces or the handles of a bag.
Here's how to tie a simple knot:
-
Take the two ends of the rope and cross them;
-
Pass one of them underneath and pull;
-
By pulling each side in opposite directions, you will tighten the knot.
Speaking of rope, this is one of the pieces of equipment used in team roping. See what it is, where it came from, and how to practice this sport.
2. Trucker's hitch or Carioca knot
The Carioca knot, also known as a trucker's hitch, is widely used for tying down heavy, regularly shaped loads, such as boxes and furniture.
It provides a firm and secure tie-down during transport in trucks, roof racks, or cars with beds, and at the same time, it's easy to untie. Learn how to tie this knot:
-
Tie the rope to one side of the load on a sturdy base, such as a fixed bar or hook;
-
Pull the other end with one hand and, with the other, make a loop slightly above. Hold it;
-
With the other hand, take the loose end and make a turn;
-
Put your hand inside the turn and pinch the rope from the inside;
-
Place the loop you formed inside the first loop you made and are holding with your hand;
-
When you tension one of the loops, it tightens the other, making it adjustable to tighten or loosen the rope.
3. Running knot
A running knot is a type of knot used to tie a rope to something that the more you pull, the tighter the loop gets. Here's how to tie it:
-
Tie a simple knot, but don't tighten it so much that the loop disappears;
-
Pass one of the ends through the formed loop and pull the new loop, joining the two ends;
-
Adjust the knot where you want it by pulling one of the ends.
There is another way to tie a running knot:
-
Make two loops in the rope in the same direction;
-
Pass one through the other;
-
Pull the end of the loop that remained outside and adjust.
To check if the running knot is correct, just test if it comes undone when you pull both ends.
4. Butterfly knot or alpine butterfly knot
The butterfly knot forms a fixed loop in the middle of a rope. It is widely used in climbing or rappelling with a
Learn how to tie the knot:
-
Make three wraps with the rope around your hand;
-
With your hand open, place the first loop you made in the center;
-
Take the loop that was made first and make a full turn around all the ropes;
-
Remove from your hand and pull the two ends.
5. Figure-seven knot
This is a type of sailor's anchor knot for the middle of a rope, very similar to the butterfly knot. See the step-by-step instructions on how to tie it:
-
Make a loop in the rope;
-
Bring this loop over the side that is on top of the loop and make a turn;
-
Take this loop and put it inside the first one you were holding;
-
Pull until adjusted.
6. Figure-eight knot or Flemish bend
The figure-eight knot, also known as the Flemish bend, is a type of stopper knot that prevents the rope from slipping or coming undone. It has numerous applications in climbing anchors.
Here's how to tie the knot:
-
Make a loop in the middle of the rope;
-
Take one of the sides and wrap the rope around the loop;
-
Pass the end through the initial loop and pull.
-
You'll notice that the loop is shaped like the number 8.
7. Fisherman's bend
The fisherman's bend is used to join ropes with equal ends.
Learn how to make it:
-
Tie a simple knot on one of the ropes, encircling the other, and tighten;
-
Do the same with the end of the other rope;
-
Now, pull the two ropes in opposite directions to join the knots.
