4 tips to help you open a can without a can opener
You've probably found yourself in a situation where you didn't even have a can opener to open a can in your kitchen, right? Since many people have experienced this, we've prepared a list of 4 different ways to make this process easier.
Aluminum cans have thinner material in the lid than on the sides, making them not so difficult to open with other objects. If we use the right techniques and tricks, we can open them without the help of openers and without much effort.
You'll probably find all the items you need are materials you have at home, even though a can opener is a basic kitchen utensil. However, we know it always "disappears" because it's such a small item.
Basically, you'll need a knife, a sturdy spoon, a pocket knife, or a stone block. Check it out!
1- Opening a can with a knife (adults only)
Certainly, in a situation where you don't have a can opener nearby, the first thing you might think is: "I'll open it with a knife", and guess what, it's possible! However, this action is risky, so it should only be done by adults and with great care.
When using a knife to open a can, the sharper the utensil, the easier and faster it will be for you to open it. However, the chances of cutting yourself are greater, in this case, it is essential to use anti-cut gloves.
To open with a knife, you need to follow these steps: position the tip on the edge of the lid, almost at the rim, and hold firmly to the handle. With the other hand, you will tap the end of the knife handle a few times until it punctures the lid.
After making this hole, you will make a "back and forth" motion to widen the hole to the sides. Once done, you repeat the same process on the other side of the can until other holes are formed and the can is open.
2- Opening a can with a spoon
A spoon can be very useful to help you with this task. Use those made of a more resistant material, like metal, so you don't run the risk of denting or even breaking your utensil.
With the can on a flat surface, position the tip of the spoon at the edge of the lid, so that it fits snugly into the groove found on most aluminum cans, and then, hold firmly to the spoon handle and start moving it back and forth, in quick movements.
After that, you will notice that the aluminum will begin to wear out and puncture little by little. From that hole, you can simply continue the process of cutting with the spoon, or you can finish opening the can with the help of a sharp utensil, until it opens completely.
3- Opening a can with a pocket knife (adults only)
This process is very similar to opening with a knife. To perform this task with a pocket knife, place the tip of the utensil on the edge of the lid and press the handle of the pocket knife with one hand. With the other, tap the end of the handle a few times until it makes a hole in the lid.
After the hole is made, you can make side-to-side movements until the hole gets bigger, and you can insert the entire tip of the pocket knife into the can, to then slide it all around the rim until the lid is completely removed.
4- Opening a can with a stone
We can say that this may be your last option, but one of the safest, as most require the use of sharp utensils. Using a stone can be useful if you are camping in the forest and do not have an opener on hand.
After getting a block of stone that is larger than the can, place it on a firm surface and begin the process of rubbing the lid part of the can.
Rub repeatedly, using considerable force, until the aluminum begins to wear out and the can is completely open.
