O que é katana? Conheça a história e os detalhes da espada

Featured in countless martial arts, animations, and combat games, the legendary Japanese sword, known as "Katana", intrigues due to its curved and narrow shape, distinct from any other blade you find out there.

Generally associated with a type of wooden sheath, which allows for quick drawing of the sword, the Katana is an instrument that hides mystery and tradition fused in the highest quality steel, having been the main weapon of samurais in combat.

The Katana began to be produced during the feudal period in Japan and its handle, designed for wielding the sword with two hands, can have a square or circular handguard. If you want to discover the history and functions behind this centuries-old item, just keep reading!

What is the meaning of Katana?

The literal translation for the word "Katana" would be "saber", but its unique shape and its incorporation into Japanese history transformed the term into a word in the Western vocabulary during the 16th century.

However, the Japanese pronunciation for "Katana" places the tonic syllable at the end of the word (kataná), while Western speakers usually pronounce it "katãna".

In Japan, the Katana is not only a weapon with a military function, but also a form of art, from its production to its handling.

Initially produced by hand, it was considered an extension of the mind and body of the warrior who kept it at their waist, eventually being declared "the soul of the samurai" by the authorities of the time.

When was the Katana created?

The emergence of the Katana was gradual and occurred at the end of the Japanese medieval period, with the need for a more efficient blade, after realizing that the Katana's predecessor, known as "Tachi", was not capable of piercing enemy armor.

Swords preceding the Katana, when broken, could not be restored. For this reason, Japanese manufacturers also felt the need to create another sword.

Reproducing the curvilinear characteristic of the Tachi, but with improved base and resistance and adjusted blade size and tip, the blacksmiths then brought the Katana to life.

Despite having a slightly shorter blade length than the Tachi, its unilateral cutting edge was as efficient as its new characteristic: an extremely sharp tip, capable of piercing hard surfaces such as the metal of opponents' defenses.

What is a Katana used for?

The Katana is the main instrument for handling in Kenjutsu, the Japanese martial art dedicated especially to sword training. They can also appear as decorative items in homes of antique and rarity collectors.

Still considered today one of the great symbols of Japanese power, the Katana was used in conjunction with another curvilinear Japanese blade, the Wakizashi, suitable for close combat. Thus, samurais performed their duels alternating between the two weapons.

During this period, the Katana was used to cut wooden objects, pierce surfaces such as armor and shields, and, mainly, deliver severe blows against enemies at vital points. The quick drawing motion from the sheath ensured the swordsman extreme reach and precision against threats.

What is the difference between a Katana and a sword?

"Sword" is a generic term, used to refer to any cutting item with a uniform blade the size of or larger than a machete. The Katana is a type of sword, but curvilinear and with immense cultural and historical value for its country of origin, Japan.

While most swords have an edge on both sides, separated by the bevel located in the central part of the blade, the bevel and the cutting side of the Katana are close to the lateral extremity of the sword.

As observed in previous periods, the history of this highly differentiated saber places it as a singular artifact among others.

What is the manufacturing process of a Katana?

This sword is produced using three main instruments: tongs, a mallet, and an anvil. The manufacturing process is based on the Chinese method of heating, bending, and flattening the metal until the blade is shaped as desired.

The resistance of the Katana's blade comes from the fusion of two types of metals: a layer of more flexible carbon steel that centers two other layers of more rigid carbon steel.

The curved shape of the blade occurs during its cooling process, when the incandescent sword blank is plunged into water or cold oil. This sudden change in temperature causes a slight deformation in the laminar part of the sword, contracting its rear and bulging its front, creating the characteristic arc of the Katana.

As for the crafting of its hilt, it is common to use stingray or shark skin sewn with silk to ensure comfort and firmness when handling it.

What can a Katana cut?

The cutting power of a common Katana is enough to sever lower and upper limbs of the body. Thus, metals, plastics, paper, and glass with less resistance than a human bone are also easily sliced by the powerful Japanese blade.

For this, however, extensive and meticulous training is required to achieve techniques that ensure the Katana's cutting efficiency. Another interesting detail is the sword's piercing power, often more coveted than its cutting function itself.

This is because its tip, capable of penetrating metals and other solid surfaces, is even more lethal when trained to hit vital points of opponents, as samurais were instructed in the Japanese medieval period.

What is the value of a Katana?

The prices of a Katana vary greatly, as they depend on the materials used in its manufacture, the way the sword is produced, the region where it is manufactured, among other factors.

Not to mention the inestimable value a Katana can possess according to its history of use. However, currently you can find the saber available on the market, with prices starting from R$ 1350.00.

How does carrying a Katana work?

The Katana is considered a bladed weapon, as, according to the official description for these weapons, it is "any artifact with cutting or piercing potential". Thus, its carrying is included in the legislation on bladed weapons.

However, in Brazil, this legislation is somewhat confusing. Currently, there is no document that confirms the legality of carrying bladed weapons, while the law states that carrying a bladed weapon without a possession license can result in 15 days to 6 months in prison or a fine.

Thus, the carrying of small bladed devices such as knives and pocketknives depends on the interpretation of authorities. In other words, it is not completely illegal to carry any of these items, as long as you avoid conflicts involving their use.

There is no impediment factor for the Katana to be displayed in a gallery or room as a collectible or decorative element.

On the other hand, due to its size and some other factors, walking around with a Katana may not be the best idea.

More than a sword, an almost millennial art

The records of the first Katana date back to the 12th century, meaning this item perseveres to this day with millennial potential, as it is rich in beauty, history, and tradition. For these reasons, this sword has already established itself as one of the most legendary artifacts ever.
