Dealing with survival situations is quite unusual for most Brazilians. We are so immersed in urban life that we forget our natural survival instinct.

Those who enjoy adventures and spending time in nature, camping, need to be aware of the dangers and difficulties that may arise. It is important to equip yourself with so-called survival tools. After all, you cannot predict what awaits you in the dense forest, near rivers and waterfalls.

In today's post, we will help you choose a good survival knife for these situations.

How to choose a good survival knife?

Tent, sleeping pad, food, and water are essential for anyone going camping, regardless of the location. Don't forget to bring a good blade too!

A pocket knife is essential. It cannot be left off your camping list! There are situations where only a pocket knife can help, such as cutting a rope, cooking, or preparing a campfire. But it is important that you understand – at least the basics – of how to choose good survival equipment and avoid trouble.

Most people tend to choose an object based solely on its design, but this is not the priority characteristic. There is much more to consider when buying a pocket knife: size, sharpness, blade thickness, and whether it is fixed or foldable.

Size

Size is quite important, as depending on it, it will be easier or harder to handle. Generally, the larger the pocket knife, the more powerful it is, and it has the capacity to cut more resistant materials and wider thicknesses.

The brand of the equipment should also be considered. Not just any will do the trick. You will need a high-quality pocket knife so you don't get stuck.

Sharpness

Sharpness is another essential factor when choosing a good pocket knife. The shape and thickness of the blade completely influence its use.
The Drop point blade, for example, which has a slightly curved tip downwards, is widely used for small manual tasks, such as peeling and cutting food, or for details during fishing. In other words, it is a general-purpose sharpness.

The blade known as Tomahawk is more piercing. It has a more tapered tip, suitable for self-defense.

The Gecko blade is great for survival. Extremely sharp and pointed, it has a piercing function, ideal for splitting small logs for a campfire.

Fixed or Folding Blade?

You've just seen some of the most commonly used blades for survival situations. But don't forget to bring a knife or a machete. A more robust tool may be necessary during camping.

Most pocket knives are foldable to easily fit in your pocket. The idea is that they are practical objects. A robust knife, however, is fixed and therefore harder to break during intense work.

Above all, we need to consider the blade's thickness. The thicker it is, the firmer and more resistant it will be. An example of this is the full tang model, with the blade extending from the beginning to the end of the knife. The handle consists of two parts glued or fixed to the blade.
